The E39 BMW 5-series (sold from 1997 to 2003 in North America) was an evolution from the outgoing E34 5er, but the classy styling was one of the last pre-Bangle designs and penned by Tokyo born Joji Nagashima. The touring version was particularly pretty and available with a manual gearbox.
Find this !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! wagon for sale in Burke, VA for $6,000 via bimmerforums.com.
The E39 was available in 5-door wagon trim starting in 1999 and was available with inline 6-cyl or V8 power. Unfortunately the V8 was not available with a clutch pedal; if you wanted to shift your own gears you needed to get the lower power engine. The 5-speed Touring wagon version was sold in limited quantities but makes a cool family car today.
The E39 with 5-speed manual was mated to a 2.8 liter six making 193
horsepower and 206 ft-lbs of torque. It isn't all bad in 6-cyl E39
world as the V8 powered versions were saddled with the old E34
generation steering box setup fit for a Mack truck. The rack and pinion
steering system was reserved for cars with the more svelte inline engines only.
This one looks to be in great shape for the price and seems to be wearing E46 3er wheels - although the seller doesn't specify.
See another cheap BMW touring?

Hmm that's not too far for me... Might have to go check it out when the snow goes away, but the price is a little high. You can find 528iT's for much less but you will have to look around to find one in this good condition

I've been longingly looking at this for the past week on CL. For that price I could sell my 330Ci and come out ahead maybe $1,000 after taxes tags and title. This with some sport seats from another 5er and an ESS supercharger would be lovely to drive.

It's worth noting that while this example is a good price, any other pre-01 models will have the different head lights - the non-Halo light set up.

I really (really) want an E39 M5 Touring, but alas, it was never made. A guy on the M5 Board is making one (a proper one, not just a S62 swap) and it' looks like a ridiculous amount of work.

My mom had an 02 one that she sold for 2,000 a couple of years ago.

Nah. Buy the sixer, throw an M5 interior in there, put M5 front and rear bumper covers on it, install LSX.

I'm an E46 sedan owner and this reminds me of the posts on the E46 forum about how to swap out a Steptronic with a 5 speed. Eek. Too much work. Just get another E46. They are cheap and readily available.
